BIOGRAPHY

The Most Reverend Benny Varghese Edathattel, a dedicated priest of the Diocese of Kohima, currently serves as the Second Bishop of the Diocese of Itanagar. His life and ministry have been marked by a deep commitment to faith, education, and pastoral care.

Early Life and Background

Born on April 22, 1970, in Njayappilly, near Kothamangalam, Kerala, to the late Varghese Cheriyan and Annakutty, Bishop Benny spent his formative years in Vadattupara, Kerala. His faith journey began when he decided to join the Diocese of Kohima to pursue his vocation to the priesthood.

Education and Ecclesiastical Formation

Bishop Benny embarked on his ecclesiastical studies starting with Good Shepherd Seminary in Dimapur for his minor seminary training, followed by orientation courses at St. Peter's Seminary in Tura. He furthered his education in philosophy at Salesian College in Dimapur and completed his theological studies at Oriens Theological College in Shillong. He was ordained a priest on April 19, 1999, marking the start of a significant ministry.

Bishop Benny attended the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila, Philippines, where he earned diplomas in Pastoral Ministry and Effective Steward Leadership. He also holds a Master’s degree in Pastoral Theology from Ateneo de Manila University, in addition to a Master's degree in History and a Bachelor of Education from Guwahati University.

Assistant Priest at St. Thomas Parish in Tuensang
Dean and Administrator at St. Xavier's Seminary in Jalukie
Director of the Agricultural Training and Production Centre in Jalukie
Secretary to the Bishop of Kohima
Parish Priest and Principal at St. Peter's Church in Kiphire
Administrator at St. Joseph's College in Jakama
Parish Priest at St. Joseph's Church in Songlhuh
Director of the Newman Pastoral Centre in Chumukedima, where he actively supported the Small Christian Communities (SCC) and Catechetical Commissions of Northeast India.

Bishop of Itanagar

On October 15, 2023, he was consecrated and installed as the Bishop of Itanagar. In this important role, he is entrusted with the guidance and nurturing of his community in faith.

Fluent in multiple languages—including English, Malayalam, Nagamese, Tagalog, Hindi, and Nyishi—Bishop Benny is a leader who is a bridge-builder. His ability to connect across diverse cultures and communities enhances his effectiveness in ministry.

He is also serves as a Chairman Bishop for the Catechetical Commission of Northeast India Regional Bishops Council (NEIRBC).
